Jade
Sitting at the table with the Reginas, Jade looked up and was completely puzzled when the Leelas entered the room.
âWhat?â she said, standing up, knocking her coffee over. The cup shattered on the tile, but otherwise, a pin could drop in the room, and they would all hear it.
Each Leela was dressed differently and moving about independently, not identically. Jade shot a look at the equally surprised Reginas, who shook their heads, crossed themselves, and said, âHoly shit!â
Jade quickly reviewed the day in her mind and the process that she meticulously followed for both sets of doubles, thinking in the chaos she might have missed a step. Or maybe the Reginas did.
âHow could this have happened?â she said.
âIt shouldnât have,â the Reginas said, looking at each other and back at Jade. âWe went over every inch.â
Jadeâs face was dark, trying to control a thunderstorm of emotion. Silently, she hurried to a cabinet, pulled out a small broom and dustpan, and crouched down to clean up the cup shards. One Regina moved forward to assist her, but Jade jerked a hand up stopping her.
âWhat is your problem?â Leela and Mimi said.
âSomethingâs off. A mistake was made. Youâre not acting the way new doubles act. Youâre different, thatâs what the problem is,â Jade said.
âThis is my process, my gift to you, and this ruins everything! You need time to adjust to your oneness. It takes several remergings of your experiences to get the balance right. You shouldnât be individuals.â
Dustpan in hand, Jade threw her hands up in the air.
âRight now, youâre supposed to be one,â Jade said. âYou need to be one. How did you tell yourselves apart?â
She turned to the Reginas advancing toward them, âWhat did you miss?â
In perfect uniformity, both Reginasâ faces blanched. They got up from the table and took a step back.
âNothing!â Leela said, stepping forward between Jade and the Reginas.
âNothing!â said Mimi, moving to Jade and taking her by the arm. âItâs okay. We just knew.â
Jade set the dustpan and broom on the table and sat down, leaning forward, head in hands.
âYouâre ruined.â
Leela and Mimi stiffened at the words.
âYouâll be jealous,â Jade said. âYouâll be confused. And with Mark in the pictureâ¦I canât even begin to sort through the complications.â
âItâs all right,â Mimi said. âReally. Weâre fine. We know each other. We trust each otherâ¦we love each other.â
At that moment, Mark walked into the kitchen, took in the scene, and looked to Leela and Mimi.
âWell, Iâll be damned,â he said.
Leela and Mimi looked up at their husband and smiled.
âMark, this here is Mimi,â Leela said. Both women walked over to him, reaching up, kissing him on either side of his face.
